You don't have to spend twenty years in a job that you hate. Plan your career every step of the way. It has been said that it's not what you know, it's who you know. It's also who knows you. So, a crucial step in your plan for success is to create your own public relations campaign. Become the advertising campaign for your career.
That means plugging into the network. I know, what you’re thinking, “Ah man, I gotta stand around making small talk with people I don’t even know?”. Well yes, sometimes you do.
But, ease yourself into it by starting within your company. First of all, you’ll be on familiar ground. And secondly, you’ll be making your presence known to the people that you want to know you exist. There are a number of ways to network in the company. Start by attending company functions. If your company has a picnic – go! If they have milestone celebrations, go to those, as well. Remember, you want to be seen. Another good networking strategy is to volunteer to give a talk on your area of expertise. Become the one to turn to for answers in your area. Then,after you are comfortable networking with your co-workers, venture outside of your company.
